This mini kachina by Rosalind Grey depicts a hoop dancer figure holding two white hoops, which immediately become the defining feature of the carving. The circular hoops contrast nicely with the figure’s otherwise straight, vertical form, giving the small piece a sense of rhythm and motion. A white fur collar softens the painted face and red upper body, while the white lower garment keeps the blue, coral, and black geometric markings easy to notice. Hoop dancer kachinas are often associated with dance, storytelling, and ceremonial performance.
